The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system will start operating on August 30.
City of Joburg mayor Amos Masondo on Wednesday revealed that on that day, residents can use the buses for free.
"The BRT is central to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, and we need a world-class transport system. We are using the pressure that comes with the World Cup to build a world-class transport system for all," he said.
He was confident the taxi industry wouldn't stop the launch.
Residents should note the following upcoming events:
A public transport summit will take place this Saturday at the Nasrec Expo Centre. The aim is to share information, discuss issues and deepen understanding of Rea Vaya.
A fun day and official unveiling will take place on Sunday. Residents can try out the new buses at Thokoza Park, Soweto.
In the starter phase, 40 buses will be running. There will be 140 by January.
