SPOTTED: BMW's electric i3 is set to be launched in 2013.
Our spies uncovered images of BMW’s electric i3 during filming of a TV commercial in Scandinavia.
The new i3, also known as the MegaCity Vehicle, will be launched under BMW’s new “i” sub-brand with a tag line of Born Electric.
Unveiling of the i3 production version along with the i8 hybrid supercar will take place in 2013. Both models will be built at the Leipzig plant and ride on the "LifeDrive architecture" which has an aluminium chassis and a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell.
The i3 will produce well over 96kW via electric motors and described by the German automaker as "futuristic premium mobility", the new model is expected to retail for the rand equivalent of about R381 000.
BMW plans to sell as many as 30 000 units in its first year of sales in 2014.
